Class of 2021 new students of the Japanese Language Education Study Programme have a different experience of learning Japanese. Of the 43 new students, 55.8% have studied Japanese for 3 years, 11.6% have studied Japanese for 1 year and 32.6% have never studied Japanese before. The experience of learning Japanese that new students have will certainly affect their Japanese language skills, one of which is the ability to write Japanese characters, namely hiragana and katakana. Of the 43 new students, 83.8% stated that they were able to write hiragana and katakana, while 16.2% stated that they had not been able to write hiragana and katakana. The difference in percentage between the learning experience and ability to write Japanese characters is caused by some new students who do not receive Japanese language teaching at school. Those who are not learning Japanese before then learn to write Japanese letters by themselves.
In addition, before entering the Japanese Language Education Study Programme they prepare themselves to learn to writr Japanese characters. New students also equip themselves with the ability to hear and read Japanese. The ways used to learn Japanese outside of school are by listening to Japanese songs, watching movies, dramas, series, reality shows, and reading manga. Of the 43 new students, 57.1% admitted to also learning Japanese through their favorite songs, movies, dramas, series, reality shows, or manga.
The reasons class of 2021 new students chose to study in the Japanese Language Education Study Programme are not only influenced by their Japanese language learning experience. New students are also motivated in learning Japanese. The desire to be more proficient in Japanese, to have a profession as a teacher or Japanese translator, to go to Japan to study, work, or open a business and even live and settle in Japan.
