Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha) Japanese Language Education Study Program (PBJ) warmly welcomed 32 new students in the 2024/2025 academic year. Understanding that as many as 25% of students had never studied Japanese at any previous level of education, PBJ Undiksha has designed an inclusive intensive Japanese language course for first-year students, regardless of their previous Japanese language experience.
First-year students have included intensive Japanese in their course schedule with two credits. This course is a particular PBJ Undiksha strategy to prepare students for Japanese lectures. In the Intensive Japanese Language course, students are facilitated to recognize the kana letters and understand basic sentence patterns in Japanese, which will be helpful in other Japanese lectures. In the 2023/2024 academic year, the same activity called Intensive Japanese will already be available, but it is not included in the course.
Before carrying out Intensive Japanese lectures, PBJ Undiksha first carried out preparations for preparing learning tools, including syllabus, RPS and teaching materials. PBJ designated Irodori A1 as a textbook in Intensive Japanese. Irodori A1 is suitable for beginner foreign learners of Japanese because it presents learning material that is more exciting and contextual. Because the intensive Japanese course is intended to prepare for Japanese lectures, intensive Japanese is carried out for two weeks to complete the 18 topic chapters in the Irodori A1 book.
As an evaluation of the Intensive Japanese Language course, PBJ Undiksha Study Program Coordinator, Dr. Kadek Eva Krishna Adnyani, S.S., M.Sc., conducted a survey with first year students. According to the survey results, students felt that the intensive Japanese language course had helped them, especially in developing their beginner-level Japanese language skills and getting ready for the following Japanese course. This support and guidance are integral to the PBJ Undiksha’s commitment to student success.
